Unwanted body hair is not only time consuming to remove, but it always comes back. Thankfully, there are several permanent hair removal solutions, the best being laser hair removal. As helpful as this procedure may be, there are a few things you should avoid ahead of your appointment for the best possible result. Beauty Fairy Clinic has put together a list of eight things you should avoid before your next laser hair removal appointment.
No Caffeine
Missing your morning cup of coffee may leave you with a bit of a headache, but it is worth it for smooth skin. Caffeine increases the sensitivity of the pain receptors in your skin which can make your laser treatment more painful than it should be. You only need to avoid caffeine for 24 hours ahead of your procedure, and you can resume consumption immediately after your appointment.
Skip The Tanning Bed
You should avoid both artificial and natural tanning a least a month ahead of your appointment. This also includes the use of sunless tanning products. Tanning and tanning products may increase your chances of developing hyper-pigmentation or even burns during your laser treatment.
Skip Deodorant & Cosmetics
It is important for the treatment area to be free of chemicals, cosmetics and deodorants in order for the laser procedure to be successful. The light is attracted to pigment and many ingredients can cause the beam to be attracted to the wrong place. You should also wait at least a week for your skin to heal post-treatment before wearing these items again.
No Waxing, Plucking, or Electrolysis
It may be tempting to use these methods to keep unwanted hair at bay until your appointment, but they can make your laser treatment less effective. Shaving is ok since it doesn’t disturb hair follicles, but all other methods should be avoided at least three weeks before laser hair removal procedures.
No Antibiotics
If you are on antibiotics, you should reschedule your appointment for a later date. Make sure that at least a week has gone by since your last dose before going in for a laser treatment. Photosensitivity is increased while on antibiotics which can cause inflammation in the skin, fatigue, fever, blisters, and rashes.
Be Gentle With Skin Care
Skin care is important, but it is a good idea to use a gentle routine before and after your laser hair removal procedure. Some of the ingredients in many common skincare products can cause irritation if used in the three days before or after a laser hair removal treatment.
Mind Aunt Flo
During your menstrual cycle, your hormones and your skin are in a state of flux. In addition, the body is more prone to feeling pain. You should wait until after your cycle has ended to perform a laser hair removal treatment to avoid any ill side effects.
Avoid Treatment During A Breakout
Acne is pain physically and emotionally no matter when you have a breakout. Laser treatments can worsen a breakout by overloading the glands. This can cause a more violent breakout or even scarring. It is best to schedule your treatment for a time when your active breakout has subsided instead.
